Micrel Rolls Out New Ultra High Bandwidth Voltage Regulator for Industrial, Telecom and Consumer Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL) , an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched the MIC49500, an ultra high-bandwidth, low-dropout, 5.0A voltage regulator. The IC is a follow-on higher current version of Micrel's popular MIC49150 (1.5A) and MIC49300 (3A) devices. The family is ideal for powering core voltages of low-voltage microprocessors. It is aimed at ASIC Core voltage regulators, PLD/FPGA core power supplies, linear point-of-load conversion, high-speed post-regulators, network micronPs and telecom applications. The MIC49300 is currently available in volume quantities. Pricing starts at $3.90 for 1K quantities.

"Micrel's new regulator offers a number of features that make it an ideal choice for industrial, telecom and high end consumer applications," noted Ralf Muenster, Micrel's director of marketing for power products. "The MIC49500 offers a low input voltage range that allows for conversion from 1.5V and 1.8V rails down to low output voltages that are required by state-of-the-art ASICs. In addition, the MIC49500 responds instantaneously to any abrupt load step, allowing it to work with minimal output capacitance. This reduces BOM costs, which is always a critical consideration in today's designs."

The MIC49500 is an ultra high bandwidth, low-dropout, 5.0A voltage regulator that implements a dual supply configuration. This allows for very low output impedance and very fast transient response, key performance requirements for today's demanding industrial, telecom and high-end consumer applications. The MIC49500 requires a bias input supply and a main input supply, allowing for ultra-low input voltages on the main supply rail. The MIC49500 can regulate to an output voltage as low as 0.7V, making it an ideal product for low-voltage to low-voltage conversion. Requiring a minimum of output capacitance for stability, the IC will work optimally with any type of capacitor, including small ceramic capacitors. It is available in both fixed and adjustable voltage options. The MIC49500 comes in both 7-pin S-Pak and TO-263 package option and is rated for the full industrial operating range of -40 C to 125-deg C junction temperature.
